About The Repertoire

The repertoire must be chosen with rigor and finesse. Candidates are asked to pay particular attention to the composition and balance of their program, which must showcase their technical and artistic skills, and include works from different aesthetic and historical periods.

The jury will take into account the difficulty and artistic merit of the programs for each round.

Here are some guidelines for repertoire selection:
  • Candidates may not perform the same work in two different rounds;
  • Repeats are optional as long as candidates respect usual performance practices;
  • Opera arias must be sung in the original language and key;
  • Candidates must respect the allotted time for each round in all circumstances;
  • Excerpts from works in accordance with standard performance practice, such as movements, are allowed in certain cases. However, a request must be submitted to the Competition for pre-approval. 
  • Two works must be performed in French – one in the preliminary round and the other either in the semifinal or final round.

Preliminary Round

Minimum duration 15 minutes
Application deadline: May 22, 2025

  1. An aria of your choice composed by Bach or Handel;
  2. A French melody or a German lied;
  3. An opera aria and the recitative that precedes it.
Other requirements for this round
  • Recordings that include orchestral accompaniment are not permitted; 
  • The quality of the video recording can have an impact on the jury’s decision. It is recommended to use the most advanced human and technical resources available to ensure a high-quality recording;
  • Works must be performed in at least two different languages, one of which must be French;
  • At least one of the chosen works must have been composed in the Romantic or Post-Romantic period.

Semifinal Round

Minimum duration 25 minutes | Maximum duration 35 minutes
Deadline for order and/or repertoire modifications : September 11, 2025

  1. A concert or opera aria composed by Mozart;
  2. A cycle or part of a cycle (melodies, lieder, art songs, etc.), in the original language from the same composer;
  3. An opera aria (other than by Mozart);
  4. A work by a Canadian composer written in 1990 or later, lasting at least six minutes.
Other requirements for this round
  • Excerpts from works in accordance with standard performance practice, such as movements, are allowed in certain cases. However, a request must be submitted to the Competition for pre-approval;
  • Works must be performed in at least three different languages;
  • Opera arias must be sung in the original language and key;
  • The chosen Canadian work must be for solo voice or voice and piano, and must not include electronic support such as soundtracks, sound effects or sound-altering devices;
  • Two works must be memorized in the semifinal round. 

Final Round

Minimum duration 20 minutes | Maximum duration 25 minutes
Deadline for order and/or repertoire modifications : When sending the application form (May 22, 2025).

  1. An aria from a sacred work (mass, cantata, oratorio, etc.);
  2. Two opera arias from different periods;
  3. One work or excerpt from the vocal repertoire with orchestra.
Other requirements for this round
  • Works must be performed in at least three different languages;
  • Opera arias must be sung in the original language and key;
  • The entire program of the final round must be interpreted from memory;
  • All works performed must be chosen from the repertoire list provided below (Final Round Repertoire). No exceptions will be granted.

For the sake of fairness between competitors, no changes in repertoire will be allowed after the registration of the participant.
